Call for SPESW Nominations for Regional Officers

With the SPE national conference approaching, I’d like to make you aware of the fact that we need to elect several new regional officers.

We need a new regional vice-chair to serve a three-year term, and a new regional treasurer to serve a two-year term. Please be aware that all regional officer positions are all on a voluntary basis and are crucial for our region to sustain the level of programing we have in the past.

The qualifications and duties of each position can be viewed below.

Since I am currently the only regional officer, I would like to hold the elections at the regional meeting at the national conference in San Francisco. Please email me your questions and nominations!

-Jeremias Paul

Southwest Regional Chair
Society for Photographic Education
jeremias[at]spesw[dot]org

Article 5 – Regional Officers and Leadership

Section 1. Officers Enumerated.

Each region shall elect an executive committee recognized by the national board to carry out the business of the region. All regional executive committee members and leaders are required to hold current membership with SPE. The region’s governing board will be composed of the elected and appointed officers. The officers of the regions shall consist of a chairperson, vice-chairperson/secretary, and treasurer, all of who shall be elected for a term of three years by the regional members at the time of the annual meeting at the regional gathering in the fall. Those elected will begin to serve at the subsequent national conference in the following spring, with the period between regional and national gatherings to serve as a period of orientation and transition from outgoing officer to incoming officer. (See article 7). Those receiving the simple majority (51%) of the votes will be elected. The positions will rollover in progressive years, so that only one position will transition in any given year. The regions may establish other officers and committees as they deem necessary (such as a Regional Conference Coordinator, newsletter and/or website Editor) to complete the business of the region. Additional appointed officers will serve at the discretion of the region’s executive committee.

Section 2. Chairperson.

The chairperson will have such power and will perform such duties of supervision and management as usually pertain to this office: preside in meetings of the region’s executive committee and the membership; and perform such other duties as may be properly required by the same, including oversight of the year-end reporting to national. By election, the chairperson will become Regional Affairs Committee Representative to the national society.

Section 3. The Vice-Chairperson/Secretary.

The vice-chair/secretary will have such powers and shall perform such duties as usually pertain to such offices or as are properly required by the region’s executive committee. The vice-chair/secretary will assist the chairperson and during the absence or disability of the chairperson shall exercise the power and discharge all the duties of the chairperson until the chairperson’s return or a successor is chosen. The vice-chair/secretary will also serve as secretary and in this capacity, will issue notices and recording minutes of all meetings of the membership and of the executive committee. The vice-chair/secretary will keep the minutes of the meetings of the members and the executive committee and of all committees. The vice-chair/secretary of each region is responsible for quality control of all regional communications and should preview any communication going to regional membership at large. All regional conference promotions and publications should be submitted to the regional vice-chair/secretary prior to distribution. The vice-chair/secretary will request as needed from the national office current lists of the names and addresses of all regional members. The vice-chair/secretary will sign such instruments as require a signature and will perform such other duties as usually pertain to this office as are properly required by the executive committee. Responsibility for the regional newsletter (either producing it or facilitating its production) and for the regional website (either managing it or facilitating its management) also falls to the vice-chair/secretary.

Section 4. The Treasurer.

Each regional treasurer will have the care and custody of the funds of the region and will have general supervision of the books on account. The treasurer will keep a record of, account for, and document all sources of monies received and disbursed, including funds received from the national society. Funds requested by the region from the national society will be utilized in projects reflecting interests of all members within the region. The regional treasurer will be responsible for adhering to the financial guidelines put forth by the national treasurer in accordance with IRS requirements. The regional treasurer will report to the treasurer of the society through SPE’s national office within thirty (30) days of the close of the fiscal year.
This report will include a detailed documentation of all sources of income and disbursement of funds relative to the regional treasury account. All such reports shall be executed in the name of the Society for Photographic Education and bear the signatures of the regional treasurer and chairperson. At the expiration of the term of office or in the event that the treasurer ceases for any other reason to hold the office of treasurer, a final report must be submitted which may be audited and approved by an auditor selected by the executive committee.

Section 5. Terms of Office.

All elected officers will serve a three-year term and the terms of office shall be staggered. No officer is permitted to serve more than two consecutive terms, unless approval to accept a nomination for a two-term incumbent officer is achieved by the majority vote of the regional membership.

Section 6. Replacement of Officers.

In the event of the resignation of a regional chair, the vice chair/secretary will fill that office until elections can be held, either by mail ballot or at the next annual regional meeting. In the event that any other regional offices are vacated, the chairperson will appoint a replacement until an election can be held. If necessary the Chair of the national board’s Regional Affairs Committee may intervene to manage elections for new leadership.

Section 7. Removal.

Any officer may be removed by a majority vote of the members by mail ballot. Due process outlined in Article III, Section 3 of the national society bylaws will be observed.

Section 8. Reporting of Leadership.

Any transition in regional leadership must be reported and described in full to SPE’s national office. Forms are provided for this purpose with the end of the year reporting package, but changes in leadership should be reported at the time of transition as well as at the end of the year.

Section 9. Interested Directors and Officers.

No director or officer of a region shall be interested, directly or indirectly, in any contract relating to the operations conducted by the region or national organization, not in any contract for furnishing supplies thereto, unless authorized by a two-thirds (2/3) vote of the board of directors excluding the vote of any such interested persons.

Section 10. SPE Board Service.

No director or officer of a region shall hold a position on the national board simultaneously. If a regional director or officer is elected to the national board during their regional term of office, elections will be help at the regional level for the replacement of said regional director/officer, for a replacement to complete the remaining term of office.

2011 SPE Southwest Regional Conference: November 11-13, 2011
School of Arts & Design, Santa Fe Community College
Santa Fe, New Mexico

CALL FOR PROPOSALS:

The lack of objective truth in photography appears to remain as uncontested as the intent to somehow provide it anyway. Often this is done through declared subjectivity in partially or totally constructed, manipulated or otherwise staged works. Yet, just as often, it is done by pointing the lens in a particular direction, often at great risk to the photographer, to convey what has occurred.

You are invited to submit your proposal for a presentation on how you speak truth to power or to no one in particular.

Confirmed presenters include Patrick Nagatani, Robert and Shana ParkeHarrison, Eugenia Parry, and Joel-Peter Witkin. Your Vice-Chair, Jackie Heigle and Chair, André Ruesch look forward to your submissions and welcoming you to Santa Fe in November.

Please submit your presentation proposals to santafe@spesw.org no later than May 31st, 2011.

more info coming soon…

UPDATE: MEETING TIME: FRIDAY, March 11, 2011 11:00am – 11:45am

Hello Everyone!

I am in the process of putting together the agenda for the southwest regional member’s meeting that will be held during the national SPE conference in Atlanta.

At the top of the list is the announcement of this fall’s regional conference. I feel like it probably will be the emphasis of the meeting and we, the regional officers and the chairs of the fall conference, would like to pick your brains a little about what you liked and/or disliked at previous conferences, so we can make this years regional the best it can be.

Additionally, if there are any general ideas and/or concerns you’d like to be discussed at the meeting and/or you would like me to convey to the national SPE board during my meetings with them, please let me know!

Here is the agenda so far containing some thoughts, some of which were somewhat addressed at last years regional meeting and some that are new, that will discussed at the meeting:

1. 2011 Regional Conference (Announcement: Location, Theme, Call for Presenters, Input?)
2. 2012 Regional Conference (Thoughts?)
3. SPE Southwest Newsletter (Interest, Help)
4. Future Scholarship(s)
5. News from national SPE board

Please let me know about any additions or thoughts you may have via e-mail before the meeting in Atlanta, so we can discuss them there.

See you in Atlanta!
